During the night of August 9, 2026, the Russian army once again attacked the Zhytomyr region with guided jet-powered drones. The strikes damaged civilian infrastructure, a private company with German investment, and a residential building. Three people were injured.

What the Regional Administration Chief Reported

At 7:36 a.m., Vitaliy Bunечko, head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, reported the consequences of the attack on Facebook. According to him, the strikes damaged civilian infrastructure, with hits also recorded at a private company with German investment. Debris fell on residential and utility buildings, while one private house sustained a direct hit.

According to preliminary information, three people were injured. One person was hospitalized with burns, while two others suffered acute stress reactions. Relevant emergency services are working at the sites, assessing the damage, clearing the consequences of the attack and documenting the destruction. Information about the final extent of the damage is still being уточнено.

Correspondents and local residents reported on social media that explosions were heard intermittently in Zhytomyr from midnight until dawn. Thick black smoke was visible over the city from several areas.

Timeline of the Night: Three Air-Raid Alerts in Seven Hours

According to monitoring Telegram channels and the Ukrainian Air Force, the night of August 9 was tense in the Zhytomyr region. An air-raid alert was declared three times, with only short intervals between them.

First Alert: 00:07–01:31

The first alert was declared at 00:07. A minute later, reports emerged of UAVs entering the Zhytomyr region from Kyiv region.

Reports of drone movements continued almost continuously. At 00:11, a jet-powered UAV was reported heading toward Andrushivka. At 00:34, another was reported heading toward Radomyshl before passing the city toward Zhytomyr. At 00:40, a UAV was reported directly heading toward Zhytomyr, followed at 00:42 by an additional alert in Korosten district.

Over the next hour, drones were reported heading toward Smokivka, Kroshnia, Malovanka, Teterivka and Narodychi. Shortly after 1 a.m., additional UAVs were reported heading toward Andrushivka and Malyn.

At 01:08, a group of jet-powered UAVs was reported heading toward Zhytomyr and Chernyakhiv. At 01:14, explosions were again heard in Zhytomyr.

At 01:20, the situation involving Shahed drones was described as generally stabilized, although reports indicated that strikes had occurred. The alert ended at 01:31 after nearly an hour and a half.

Second Alert: 03:29–04:09

The second alert was shorter but no less tense.

Several minutes after it began, four UAVs were reported moving from Kyiv region toward Malyn. At 03:41, a group of jet-powered drones was reported heading toward Zhytomyr.

At 03:46, residents were warned about three Shahed drones heading directly toward the city and urged to remain in shelters. Several minutes later, two more jet-powered drones were reported over Zhytomyr.

The final report before the all-clear came at 03:59, when a UAV was detected near Zabriddia. The alert ended at 04:09.

Third Alert: 05:17–07:22

The third and longest alert lasted more than two hours.

Initially, drones were reported approaching from Kyiv region. Several minutes later, two UAVs were reported heading toward Malyn and another two toward Chopovychi.

Further reports indicated drone movements toward Chernyakhiv and Malyn. At 05:39, UAVs were reported heading directly toward Zhytomyr from the north.

After a short pause, the drone activity resumed. Around 6 a.m., UAVs were reported heading toward Nova Borova and Chernyakhiv. At 06:03, Zhytomyr residents were again urged to remain in shelters.

At 06:11, two jet-powered UAVs were reported heading toward Radomyshl. Several minutes later, they passed the city toward Zhytomyr, while another drone was moving toward Svityn.

The final reports came at 06:24, with a UAV heading toward Radomyshl, and at 06:37, with another heading toward Korostyshiv. The third alert ended at 07:22, after the situation in the region had calmed.

Air Force Warned of an Elevated Threat

Throughout the night, the Ukrainian Air Force repeatedly warned of an elevated threat to Zhytomyr and the region due to the possibility of attacks from the north and northeast.

Reports of jet-powered UAVs heading toward Zhytomyr were issued at 00:00, 00:21, 00:43, 00:59, 01:13, 03:41, 05:18, 05:39, 05:59 and 06:18.

Warning Issued the Day Before

Notably, on August 8 at 21:29, Vitaliy Bunечко had already urged residents of the region not to ignore air-raid warnings in the coming period and to follow safety rules, including staying in shelters during alerts.

He also stressed that responsible officials and heads of organizations must ensure unrestricted access to shelters.

As the night of August 9 demonstrated, the warning was not issued without reason.
