Tomashhorod is an urban-type settlement in Volhynian Polissia, within the Rokytne hromada of Sarny Raion, 10 kilometres by rail from Rokytne. It grew up around a station on the Korosten — Sarny line and around granite quarries that are still in operation.

Where the name comes from

Tomashhorod was founded in the early 20th century when a railway station was being built here. The settlement got its name from Tomasz Hys, a former official of several surrounding villages.

Quarries

Granite is the main wealth of Tomashhorod. Between the wars, the quarries belonged to an engineering and construction company, and in 1937 a workers' strike broke out here. Today, crushed stone and stone-crushing plants operate in the settlement, extracting granite.

World War II

During the war, partisan detachments operated near Tomashhorod. On the night of 4 December 1942, Fedorov's detachment destroyed the station and blew up two railway bridges. Thirty-six residents of the settlement fought at the fronts. Tomashhorod received urban-type settlement status in 1960.

Nature

Around it are Polissian pine forests and swamps typical of the Rokytne region. In autumn, mushrooms and cranberries are gathered here.
