Klevan Castle is the remains of the Czartoryski princes' fortress in the western part of the urban-type settlement of Klevan, 25 km from Rivne. A viaduct across the moat, two stone "puntone" towers, and the buildings of a former theological school have been preserved. The castle is easy to combine with a walk to the Tunnel of Love, which is a few kilometers away from here.
Czartoryski Castle
Klevan was first mentioned in 1458 as the property of Prince Mykhailo Czartoryski, and the first records of the fortress date back to 1475. It was built on a hill above the Stubla River. In 1495, Mykhailo's son, Prince Fedir Czartoryski, the headman of Lutsk, surrounded the castle with stone walls and a deep moat filled with water from the Stubla.
At the same time, two masonry pentagonal "puntone" towers were erected at the corners: one protected the entrance gate, and the other controlled the approaches from the river. Both are well preserved, especially the eastern one.
What to see
The viaduct leading to the gate across the moat, both towers, the walls, and the castle courtyard with later-period buildings. The Stubla valley is clearly visible from the ramparts.
How to get there
Klevan lies west of Rivne, on the road to Lutsk. Suburban trains and buses run here.
