Krashevsky Rock is a geological natural landmark in Zhytomyr Raion of Zhytomyr Oblast. It is located southeast of the village of Perliavka and north of the village of Holovenka, on the right bank of the Hnylopiat River. Despite its small area — only 0.01 hectares, — this location has significant scientific, conservation, and tourist value.
The rock received the status of a local natural landmark by the decision of the regional executive committee dated November 20, 1967, No. 610. Currently, the object is under the jurisdiction of military unit A-0339.
Geology: a granite massif over 30 meters high
Krashevsky Rock is part of the Ukrainian Shield. It is composed of gray granite and migmatite of the Paleoproterozoic era. The height of the rock massif exceeds 30 meters, making it visible from afar in the Hnylopiat valley.
Granite slabs form natural ledges, niches, and deep crevices. It is this structure that creates special microclimatic conditions due to which rare plants have been preserved on the rock.
Relict flora: Woodsia ilvensis from the Red Data Book of Ukraine
Special value is given to Krashevsky Rock by Woodsia ilvensis — a relict fern of the Tertiary period, listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine.
It grows in the niches and crevices of granite slabs, where moisture is retained longer. Such flora testifies to the antiquity of the ecosystem and its exceptional conservation importance. The preservation of relict plants was one of the reasons for granting the object protected status.
History of monument conservation
Interest in protecting this territory arose as early as the first half of the 20th century.
On July 16, 1926, the Volyn Research State Museum appealed to the Ukrainian Committee for the Protection of Natural Monuments with a list of natural objects of the Volyn Okrug that needed designation as protected areas. The letter emphasized that the region lacked full-fledged nature reserves, so it was necessary to grant protected status to the most valuable areas.
Subsequently, in 1967, Krashevsky Rock officially became a geological natural landmark.
Tourist appeal: landscapes and Vchelka Waterfall
The rock stands in the picturesque Hnylopiat valley, which attracts tourists, local historians, and photographers. The high granite cliff, river valley, and forests create a unique natural landscape.
Approximately 2 kilometers to the north, downstream, is another natural attraction, the Vchelka Waterfall. Together, these objects form a small tourist route.
Access
The rock and waterfall are located on the lands of the Zhytomyr military training ground. Access here may be restricted, especially during exercises and under martial law. Before a trip, it is worth checking current restrictions, not going beyond prohibitive signs, not photographing military objects, and not touching unfamiliar items.
Why Krashevsky Rock is important for the Zhytomyr region
- a geological natural landmark of local significance;
- part of the Ukrainian Shield;
- a habitat of relict flora;
- an object whose conservation initiative is almost a hundred years old;
- a picturesque location near Zhytomyr.
Krashevsky Rock is small in area, but an extremely valuable natural landmark of the Zhytomyr region. It combines geological uniqueness, rare flora, and the history of the region's environmental protection cause. The preservation of such objects is important for biodiversity, the development of ecotourism, and environmental awareness.
