Vchelka Waterfall is one of the most interesting natural locations in Zhytomyr Oblast. Despite its natural appearance, this site is of artificial origin. The waterfall is located on the Hnylypyat River in the Shumske tract, between the villages of Sinhury, Holovenka, and Perlyavka, to the southwest of Zhytomyr.
Main characteristics of the waterfall
- height — about 10 meters;
- width — up to 40 meters;
- total length of the cascade — 60–80 meters;
- it consists of three rocky ledges.
Vertical granite cliffs 6–10 meters high rise near the cascade, creating a picturesque landscape. Approximately 2 km upstream is another natural landmark of the region, Krashevsky Rock, which is over 30 meters high.
Where the waterfall is located
The waterfall lies within the limits of the Teteriv hromada of the Zhytomyr district — on the territory of the Zhytomyr military training ground.
Distances to the site:
- from the village of Sinhury — about 8 km;
- from the village of Perlyavka — about 4 km;
- from Zhytomyr — about 10 km in a straight line in a southwestern direction.
Access: the waterfall at the military training ground
Vchelka is not an equipped tourist location, but a site of an active military training ground. Because of this, several things should be considered:
- the training ground territory belongs to the military, so access to it may be restricted or prohibited — especially during drills and under martial law conditions;
- before a trip, you should find out about current restrictions from the local hromada or military administration and not enter where there are prohibition signs or barriers;
- it is forbidden to photograph military objects, equipment, and service members;
- remnants of ammunition may be found at training grounds — do not pick up or touch unfamiliar objects, move only along paths.
It is best to plan a visit only when access to the territory is officially open.
History of origin: military training ground and "Harkushyn Lake"
The Vchelka Waterfall appeared in the mid-20th century. In the early 1950s, the Zhytomyr Combined-Arms Training Ground was created in this area.
To set up tank obstacles and provide the military with water, the Hnylypyat River was dammed with massive granite boulders. The work was directed by Major General Harkusha. As a result, the following were formed:
- the waterfall;
- an artificial body of water, which was named "Harkushyn Lake".
Thus, Vchelka is an example of the combination of natural relief and engineering intervention.
Origin of the name
The name "Vchelka" comes from a khutir (hamlet) of the same name that existed in this area. The hamlet belonged to the Zhytomyr doctor and philanthropist Franz Vchelka.
As of 1906, there were 43 households in the hamlet, inhabited by 232 people. In the 1950s, the residents were relocated to the present-day Maliovanka microdistrict in Zhytomyr. Along with Vchelka, other hamlets disappeared from the map: Derman, Dzyuba, Vyla, Lemeshivka, Korotynka, Mostova, Verkhni and Nyzhni Peysakhy, Slipchyntsi, Khaty, Kriukha.
Why this place is interesting
The combination of granite rocks, the sound of water, and forest areas creates a special atmosphere. Vchelka attracts photography enthusiasts, local historians, and ecotourism fans, and together with the neighboring Krashevsky Rock, it forms a small natural route in the Zhytomyr district.
Why you should see the Vchelka Waterfall
- one of the highest waterfalls in Zhytomyr Oblast;
- an unusual artificial cascade on a granite base;
- a combination of natural beauty and historical context;
- proximity to Zhytomyr.
Vchelka Waterfall is not only a picturesque location on the Hnylypyat River, but also a part of the region's history. Its emergence is connected with the creation of a military training ground, yet today it is perceived as a natural landmark of the Zhytomyr region that combines geology, the history of vanished homesteads, and tourism potential.
