The Mezhyrich Monastery is an architectural ensemble of the 16th and 17th centuries in the village of Mezhyrich near Ostroh. It is the most majestic of the surviving foundations of the Ostrozky princes: the monastery courtyard is surrounded by walls with four corner towers, so the cloister looks more like a fortress than a monastery.
The Ostrozky Fortress
Mezhyrich lay along important routes not far from Ostroh, the capital of the Ostrozky princes' domains. They turned the monastery into a fortification capable of withstanding a siege, featuring high walls, embrasures, and corner towers. The ensemble has been included in the State Register of National Cultural Heritage.
What to See
The Trinity Church with cells on either side, the gate bell tower, the southeastern building, and the defensive walls with towers. The buildings date from different periods, so one can see here how architecture changed from Gothic to Baroque. The monastery is currently active, so please dress accordingly.
How to Get There
