In the center of the village of Shapovalivka in the Konotop region, there is a small plot with steppe plantings — the "Kozatska Mohyla" (Cossack Grave) comprehensive nature landmark. Here lie the Cossacks who perished in the Battle of Konotop of 1659, one of the most glorious victories of the Ukrainian army over the Muscovite one. Every year, people come here to honor the fallen.

The Battle of Konotop
In the summer of 1659, the Muscovite army, which came to subdue Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky, besieged Konotop. The Cossack garrison, led by acting colonel Hryhoriy Hulianytsky, held the defense for over two months. In early July, the main forces of the hetman, along with the Crimean Tatars, approached the town. Near Shapovalivka, at the crossing over the Kukolka River, the Cossacks lured the Muscovite cavalry into the floodplain and, together with their allies, completely routed it. Following this, the siege of Konotop was lifted.
The Battle of Konotop demonstrated the strength of the Hetmanate under Vyhovsky. In Soviet times, it was barely mentioned, but in 2009, the 350th anniversary of the victory was solemnly celebrated in Shapovalivka.
Nature Landmark
The status of a nature landmark was granted by the Sumy Regional Council on June 27, 2008. The area of the site is 0.3 hectares, and it is cared for by the Shapovalivka community. Artificially created plantings with plants typical of the steppe are protected here, and in the center is the burial site of the Cossacks. Those who fell in the battle were also buried in Konotop, at the site where the Ascension Cathedral now stands.
How to Get There
Shapovalivka is in the Konotop district, approximately 15 km from Konotop. The Cossack Grave is in the center of the village. Combine the trip with the Konotop Local Lore Museum.
