The geological nature reserve "Kaminne Selo" (Stone Village) has recently gained popularity among tourists due to its nature and unusual stone formations. It is located in the forests of the Zamyslovychi forestry, east of the village of Rudnia-Zamyslovytska in the Olevsk hromada of the Korosten district in Zhytomyr Oblast. The local nature reserve, with an area of about 15 hectares, has long attracted the attention of both researchers and lovers of natural beauty.

In fact, "Kaminne Selo" is not a village in the usual sense. It is a cluster of huge red granite boulders 4–6 meters high amidst an oak forest, which in shape resemble buildings, streets, and squares. Their origin still gives rise to legends and scientific debates.

Legends of Kaminne Selo

Local folklore adds mystery to this place:

  • The legend of wealthy masters: once upon a time, wealthy people lived here who refused to help the poor. At dawn, their houses turned into stone.
  • The legend of Jesus and the dark forces: after defeating evil, Jesus left footprints of his feet on the stones before ascending to heaven.
  • The Devil's Mill: some stones resemble millstones. Local residents believe that devils were building a mill here, but had to flee, leaving the stone millstones behind.

These stories are part of oral folk art that fuels interest in Kaminne Selo and makes it an object of the region's cultural heritage.

Scientific theories of origin

Scientists offer several explanations for the emergence of Kaminne Selo:

  • Glacial origin: according to the oldest version, the boulders were brought here by glaciers.
  • Outcrops of the crystalline shield: most researchers believe that the boulders are local outcrops of granite of the Ukrainian Crystalline Shield, so-called denudation residuals that have been shaped by water, frost, and weathering for centuries.

Several facts support the second version:

  • The stones are of local origin: granite quarries operate nearby — 11 km away in Rudnia-Zamyslovytska and 13 km away at the "Quartz" quarry in the village of Druzhba.
  • The Valdai glacier did not reach this far, and the Dnieper glaciation glacier, although it covered Polissia, left mostly sand and smaller boulders rather than arrays of giant boulders of a single type.
  • Zhytomyr Oblast lies on the crystalline shield, not in a zone of mountain building, so the version about "remnants of ancient mountains" has weak support.

Thus, it was precisely the combination of crystalline granite outcrops and natural erosion that created the stone ensembles of Kaminne Selo.

Natural uniqueness

Kaminne Selo is interesting not only geologically, but also ecologically:

  • large stone boulders form complex labyrinths amidst the forest;
  • traces of weathering and water streams are visible on the surfaces of the stones;
  • mosses, relict ferns, and stonecrops grow on the stones, while the spiny clubmoss and the Turk's cap lily, listed in the Red Data Book, can be found in the forest;
  • around grows the pontic azalea — a plant rare for Ukraine, widespread in Asia Minor, the Caucasus, and Polissia;
  • the forest environment creates an atmosphere of mystery and tranquility, so the place attracts tourists and photographers.

The mosses on the boulders are a particularly vulnerable part of the nature reserve: in 2020, intruders tried to strip them off. Therefore, during a visit, one should avoid climbing onto the boulders unnecessarily and should not tear anything off them.

Tourist interest

Kaminne Selo has been actively visited in recent years by:

  • schoolchildren and students of natural science faculties on excursions;
  • participants of cycling tours across Polissia, who, as Maksym Melnykov noted, often make a stop here;
  • photographers, artists, and nature lovers.

Despite numerous legends, it is precisely on-site observation that allows one to appreciate the scale and beauty of the stone formations, understand their natural origin, and feel the atmosphere of Polissia.

How to get there

The nearest city is Olevsk. The landmark is the village of Rudnia-Zamyslovytska: people travel to the village across the bridge over the Perha River, and from there to the nature reserve along a forest road to the east.

Kaminne Selo is a combination of scientific curiosity and folk magic. Huge granite boulders, traces of weathering, mosses, and rare plants make this nature reserve one of the most enchanting places in Zhytomyr region. To see Kaminne Selo with your own eyes is to touch the history of the Earth.
