In the village of Hadzynka near Zhytomyr, one of the region's least researched sacral structures has survived — the Church of Saint Michael. Despite its architectural and historical value, the church remains little known to both scholars and the general public. At the same time, it is an important part of the cultural landscape of Polissia.
A village with deep historical roots
Hadzynka, situated on the Synka River, stands out not only for its unusual name, but also for its ancient history. The first written mention of the village is an act dated May 15, 1605, where it is called Hazynka. According to the 1615 lustration, the village belonged to the Zhytomyr starosty.
The wooden St. Michael's Church was described as early as 1885 as a branch church of unknown time of construction, and the bell tower next to it was built in 1878. Therefore, researchers do not rule out that the church may be older than commonly believed. Its age could only be definitively established by scientific expertise — in particular, radiocarbon analysis of the wooden structures, although such studies have not yet been conducted.
An interior that preserves the silence of centuries
The interior space of the church creates a sense of immersion in another era. Low vaults, built-in wooden tie beams with fine carving, subdued lighting — all this forms a chamber, almost homely atmosphere. The interior does not give an impression of monumentality, but instead emphasizes the concentration of prayer.
Special attention is drawn to the icons, organically inscribed in the space of the church. There is no excessive decor here — only what works for silence, concentration, and memory.
A church that is being cared for
The Church of Saint Michael is an example of how a local community can care for its heritage without radical interventions. The residents of Hadzynka maintain the church in proper condition, realizing its value not only as a place of worship, but also as a historical site.
The key task for the future is to preserve the original appearance of the church, avoiding reconstructions that could distort its authenticity. For such monuments, restrained preservation is often the best form of protection.
Why Hadzynka is worth talking about more
Against the backdrop of well-known tourist routes of the Zhytomyr region, the Church of Saint Michael in Hadzynka remains out of the focus of public attention. At the same time, it is an important example of the local sacral architecture of Polissia, which was formed not for show, but for the community.
How to get there
Hadzynka is located approximately 13 km northeast of Zhytomyr and is part of the Hlybochytsia hromada, making it convenient to drop by by car during a trip around the outskirts of the regional center.
Such places do not shout about themselves, but it is they that make up the true fabric of regional history — quiet, deep, and often underestimated.
