He belonged to a generation whose youth was defined by war. At just 16, he helped build defensive fortifications. At 18, he volunteered for military service. At 20, he was killed defending Ukraine on the front line.
Denys Volynets, a soldier from Ukraine's 100th Separate Mechanized Brigade, became a symbol of courage, selflessness, and unwavering devotion to his country.
A Difficult Childhood
Denys was born in 2005 in Ukraine's Zhytomyr region. His parents divorced when he was very young, and he never developed a close relationship with his stepfather.
He was raised by his mother and grandmother, who struggled to make ends meet. The family survived on a child support payment of just 860 hryvnias (about $20 at the time). His mother worked night shifts to provide everything she could for her son.
Despite the hardships, Denys grew up kind, determined, and responsible.
Choosing to Defend His Country
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Denys was only 16 years old.
Unable to stand aside, he volunteered wherever he could. He visited the local military recruitment office, helped guard a vocational school, and spent countless hours digging trenches for Ukraine's defenders.
The moment he turned 18, he went back to the recruitment office—this time to enlist.
His mother desperately tried to stop him. She pleaded with him, argued with him, and even promised to buy him an old Soviet-era Zhiguli car if he stayed home.
Nothing changed his mind.
A Reconnaissance Soldier and Drone Operator
Denys joined the reconnaissance unit of the 100th Separate Mechanized Brigade, where he became a drone operator.
Although he was one of the youngest soldiers in his unit, he quickly earned the respect of both his commanders and fellow servicemen.
His commander once wrote to Denys' mother:
"If it were up to me, I would award him every military decoration we have."
Saving a Fellow Soldier
One of the moments that defined Denys' service came during a fierce battle.
Under heavy enemy fire, he carried a seriously wounded comrade for nearly two kilometers, refusing to leave him behind.
For Denys, risking his own life to save another was never considered extraordinary—it was simply what a soldier should do.
His Last Leave
In December 2025, Denys finally returned home for his first leave after many months at the front.
He spent precious time with his mother, and together they had a professional photo session.
Those photographs would become some of her most treasured memories.
Neither of them knew it would be their last meeting.
Killed Near Kostiantynivka
On February 22, 2026, Denys Volynets was killed while carrying out a combat mission near Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region.
He was only 20 years old.
His body was severely burned and mutilated during the fighting. His mother was able to identify him only by his tattoo and wristwatch.
A Father Found on the Front Line
During the war, Denys found something he had missed throughout his childhood—a father figure.
A fellow soldier named Mykola, known by the call sign "Blondyn" ("Blond"), became like a father to him.
Already raising four children of his own, Mykola often called Denys his fifth son.
Whenever possible, he brought him hamburgers, homemade food, and even sushi to the front line—small comforts amid the horrors of war.
On the day he died, Denys had one simple request:
"Bring me a hamburger."
Mykola never made it in time.
After the battle, he made three attempts to recover Denys' body. The first evacuation vehicle was destroyed, the second could not reach the position, and only the third attempt succeeded.
Even today, Mykola says it still feels as though Denys has simply gone home on leave and will one day return.
His Frontline Cat
After Denys' funeral, his comrades brought his mother another precious reminder of her son—a cat that had accompanied him throughout his deployment in eastern Ukraine.
The animal now lives with the family, quietly waiting for the soldier who will never come home.
Dreams Left Unfulfilled
Like millions of young people, Denys dreamed of an ordinary future.
He wanted to propose to his girlfriend, build a house, start a family, and live in peace.
War stole those dreams.
One of his greatest ambitions had been to receive Ukraine's prestigious military decoration, the Golden Cross.
He received it posthumously.
A Hero Remembered
Denys Volynets represents an entire generation of young Ukrainians whose lives were transformed by war.
Instead of university lectures, careers, and family life, they chose to defend their homeland.
He lived only twenty years, yet in that short time he became a brave soldier, a loyal friend, and an unforgettable son.
His story is one of sacrifice, courage, and love for Ukraine.
