Korets Castle is the ruins of a fortress belonging to the Ostrogski and Koretski princes in the town of Korets, in the east of Rivne Oblast. All that remains of the former stronghold are the gate tower, part of the walls, and a stone bridge across the moat. The site is not as heavily promoted as Ostroh or Dubno, but it is quiet here, and the ruins by the river make a strong impression.

The Ostrogski Fortress
Prince Fedir Ostrogski began building fortifications above the Korychyk River in 1386. There is another version—that the first builder was Dmytro Olgerdovych—but most sources name Ostrogski as the founder. A deep moat surrounded the castle on three sides, while the river protected it from the west. The bridge was the only way to get inside.
In the 16th century, a new owner, Prince Bohdan (Bohush) Koretski, expanded the fortress. The glory of the castle originated with the Koretski family, and the name of the town became inextricably linked with it: the gate tower is still depicted on the coat of arms of Korets.

From Castle to Palace and Ruins
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the fortress was rebuilt into a palace. Prince Józef Klemens Czartoryski remodeled it for the last time in 1780. The palace burned down in 1832, and it has not been seriously restored since. In the 1920s, the owner of the ruins, Bniński, undertook repairs, but work soon stopped.
Now only ruins remain of the complex. The gate tower is three-tiered, rectangular in plan, with the remains of two-story buildings adjoining it. A viaduct, repaired in 2005, leads to the gate across the moat. What the castle looked like during its heyday can be seen in a 19th-century drawing by Napoleon Orda.

Model in the Museum
In August 2026, the Korets Historical Museum displayed a 1:100 scale model of the castle—the 18th-century Czartoryski palace complex with its entrance tower and fortifications. It was created based on measurements taken by the Lviv institute Ukrzakhidproektrestavratsiia in 1989–1990. After visiting the ruins, it is worth dropping by the museum to see what the castle looked like when it was whole.

How to Get There
Korets stands on the Kyiv — Rivne highway, about 65 km east of Rivne. The castle is in the town center, on Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Street, above the Korychyk. The ruins are open to visitors, but the walls are old: it is best not to climb onto the upper parts.
Nearby, in the same direction, is the Hubkiv Fortress on the Sluch River, and Ostrogh is not far from Rivne. You can read more about the town and its surroundings in the article about Rivne.
