Khvoshchove Boloto is a hydrological reserve with an area of 11.6 hectares north of Korosten, in the Bekhove Forestry. It received its status in 2008 to preserve an open mesotrophic bog, which is transitional between a fen and a raised bog.

What grows here

The bog is covered with cushions of sphagnum mosses, and cranberries creep across them. A stream flows out of the bog. Plants from the Green Book of Ukraine grow here—lesser bur-reed, intermediate bladderwort, and lesser bladderwort, as well as intermediate sundew, slender-rhizome sedge, Vilyui sedge, and spreading rush, which are rare for the region or listed in the Red Data Book.

Bladderworts are rootless aquatic plants that catch small aquatic animals with tiny trap bladders, while sundew catches insects with sticky hairs on its leaves.

Tip

Entering the bog is dangerous—observe it from the edge. Do not pick cranberries in the reserve: it was created precisely to protect these plants.

How to get there

The bog lies north of Korosten, in the same forest area as the Lozanove and Polihon reserves. Read more about the surroundings in the article about the Korosten district.
