The Miodynski Palace is a residence in the urban-type settlement of Lukiv in Volyn, built on the site of an old castle amidst a quadrangle of defensive walls. The palace, the English park, the ramparts, the water moats, and the stone bridge have survived to this day, making it easy to see how the castle transformed into an estate.

From Castle to Palace

In the 16th century, King Sigismund II Augustus granted Stanislaw Maciejowski, the castellan of Sandomierz, permission to build a fortified castle here with earthen ramparts and a moat fed by water from the river. A stone bridge led to the castle, and four towers stood at the corners.

Later, the estate passed into the hands of the Miodynskis. The palace was rebuilt, according to various sources, in the second half of the 18th or the first half of the 19th century, with the design attributed to the Dresden architect Matthäus Pöppelmann. An English park was laid out nearby. In 1903, the palace was sold to an Orthodox seminary, and after the Second World War, it was handed over to healthcare institutions.

The Legend of the Treasures

According to legend, the treasures of Athanazy Miodynski, which he brought from near Vienna, are hidden in the castle's cellars. They have never been found, so the legend lives on to this day.

What to See

Tip

The palace is used by healthcare institutions, so visitors are generally not allowed inside. However, the ramparts, water moats, bridge, and park are clearly visible from the outside, and a walk around the castle quadrangle will take half an hour.
