In late October, well-known Polissia fisherman and photographer Yurii Nevmerzhytskyi headed out with a spinning rod to the legendary Povch River. Autumn fishing in Polissia during this period is always full of surprises: planning to catch perch, the angler stumbled upon a genuine pike feeding frenzy accompanied by morning dampness and autumn rain.

The Povch River is one of the picturesque waterways of the Polissia region, shrouded in fishing legends. Small yet deceptive, it demands a special approach from anglers, knowledge of the water area, and an understanding of the fish's seasonal habits. While small perch go wild here on a float rod in the summer, the river reveals itself in a completely different way with the onset of cold weather.

Autumn predatory fish angling: pike frenzy and long-distance casting

According to Yurii, autumn is a special time for fishing, when the weather dictates its own rules. Mist and high humidity created ideal conditions for the toothed predator's activity.

"In the summer, I sat here with a float rod, and the perch swallowed the worm like crazy. But today's morning dampness and rain were a completely different story — a story about pike. Overall, there were about 10 strikes in the morning. I managed to land one nice kilogram-sized fish with confidence," shares Yurii Nevmerzhytskyi.

A successful autumn predatory fish angling session on the Povch River required the spinning angler to choose appropriate lures and distance:

  • Best lure: the favorite of the day was a 2-inch twister in a bright "carrot" color;
  • Fishing distance: the fish were holding far from the shore, so powerful casts of at least 40–50 meters worked;
  • Activity window: the main bite lasted until 11:00 AM, after which the predator slowed down.

Besides the pike, the angler's catch also included a few perch. There were also a few disappointing drop-offs right at his feet, but that only added to the excitement.

Photo hunting and plans for white fish

Combining fishing with photographic art, Yurii brought along a camera and several lenses to capture the autumn magic of Polissia. Despite limited time, he managed to select about two dozen vibrant and atmospheric shots of autumn nature.

The trip turned out to be doubly productive: while changing locations, the spinning angler stumbled upon a promising spot holding white fish. Therefore, already mid-week, Yurii plans to return to the Povch, but this time with a float rod.

A full atmospheric video report on what real fishing in Polissia is like in autumn will appear on Yurii Nevmerzhytskyi's YouTube channel as early as November.
