On September 4, 2026, the Zhytomyr region experienced a second consecutive day of heightened air-raid danger. According to the monitoring Telegram channel “Real Zhytomyr,” an air raid alert was declared twice during the day — at night and in the evening. Drone threats were reported in several districts of the region.

The latest developments continue a tense series of attacks in recent days, when the Zhytomyr region also came under attack on September 1 and 2.

Overnight attack on September 3–4: Russia launches a massive drone strike across Ukraine

During the night of September 4, Russia carried out another large-scale drone attack against Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces used a Kh-31P guided air-launched missile from the Black Sea and approximately 121 attack drones, most of them Shahed-type UAVs. Almost half of the drones were jet-powered. The attack also involved Gerbera drones and decoy targets, including Parodiya and S8000 Bandеrol drones.

The drones were launched from areas including Millerovo, Oryol, Kursk, occupied Donetsk region and Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea.

As of 9:30 a.m., Ukrainian air defense forces had destroyed or suppressed 103 aerial targets. Hits were recorded at 15 locations, while debris fell at another six sites.

Zhytomyr region was also under threat during this overnight attack. According to the monitoring channel, the UAV threat approached from the direction of Kyiv region, while jet-powered drones were reported moving toward Buchmany and further north toward Rivne region. The air raid alert in Zhytomyr region lasted from approximately 4:32 to 5:07 a.m.

Evening air raid alert: a second wave of the threat

Later that day, at 6:54 p.m., an air raid alert was declared in Zhytomyr and Berdychiv districts because of a UAV threat.

According to real-time monitoring by the “Real Zhytomyr” Telegram channel, drones approaching from Kyiv region changed course several times toward Popilnia. Later, groups of aerial targets were reported in the direction of Narodychi and Korostyshiv.

At around 7:11 p.m., jet-powered UAVs were reported moving toward Zhytomyr from the east. The targets subsequently split into different directions, including toward Zhytomyr and the town of Ozerne.

Separate reports mentioned UAV activity near Oliivka, Levkiv, Hlybochytsia and Smokivka. A drone was also reportedly observed over the airport area.

At approximately 7:26 p.m., the monitoring channel reported that the activity was connected with additional reconnaissance and urged residents to remain in safe locations.

At the time of publication, there was no official confirmation of hits, damage or casualties in the Zhytomyr region as a result of the evening wave. The Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration had not released such information at that time.

Context: Zhytomyr region has faced several attacks this week

According to the State Emergency Service, the Russian attack during the night of September 1 caused fires at an industrial facility and a warehouse in the Zhytomyr region. One fire was extinguished, while firefighters continued working at the second site. Their work was complicated by the threat of repeated strikes.

According to preliminary information, there were no casualties in the region at that time.

The attack was part of a large-scale overnight strike against Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 12 people were killed across the country, including an Indian citizen.

On September 2, according to Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration head Vitalii Bunеchko, Russian forces again damaged civilian infrastructure in the Zhytomyr community. Emergency workers and medics were deployed to the site, while information about possible casualties was being clarified at the time of the report.

What residents should know

The morning report of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration on September 4 stated that the full-scale invasion had reached its 1,654th day.

The attacks recorded in the first days of September demonstrate that Russia continues to target both frontline and rear regions of Ukraine, including areas far from the immediate battlefield.

Residents of Zhytomyr region are urged to respond to air raid alerts, move to shelters or other safe locations, and follow official information from authorities. Even when authorities describe the activity as reconnaissance, the threat can change rapidly.
