Shchabel is a general zoological nature reserve covering an area of 72 hectares south of the village of Ushomyr in Korosten Raion, within the Ushomyr Forestry. It has been protected since 1982.

Sazhenka River

The reserve stretches along the small Sazhenka River, a tributary of the Uzh. Its banks and floodplain are overgrown with moist forests and wetland vegetation. The ornament of these places is the bog arum: a plant with a large white spathe leaf resembling a calla lily, which forms whole thickets here.

Who Lives Here

Shchabel is a general zoological nature reserve, meaning it was created primarily to protect the fauna of the moist forests and the banks of the Sazhenka.

Tip

The bog arum blooms in May and June. The plant is poisonous, so do not pick it or taste the berries. The banks of the Sazhenka are swampy in places — stick to the paths.

How to Get There

The reserve lies south of Ushomyr. Nearby are Volosne and Sukachove, and in Ushomyr itself you will find an old park and the banks of the Uzh. More details can be found in the article about Korosten Raion.
