Slovechna is a 138 km long river in Zhytomyr Polissia, a right tributary of the Prypyat. It originates in the western part of the Slovechno-Ovruch Ridge, west of the village of Zadorozhok, flowing first northwards and then turning northeast and east. Its lower course lies in the Gomel Region of Belarus, where the Slovechna empties into the Prypyat east of the village of Viazhychi. The entire ridge got its name precisely from the village of Slovechne situated on its banks.
The River of Meanders
The basin area of the Slovechna is 2,670 km². The valley is up to 2.5 km wide, while the riverbed is narrow at 4–15 m. In its middle and lower reaches, the river is very winding, forming meanders, numerous oxbow lakes, and islands. These natural bends are especially visible from a drone or from high banks. Timber was once rafted down the Slovechna in its lower reaches.
North of the ridge, Polissia marshes stretch for 30 km along the Slovechna. Via the Svichanskyi and Antonivskyi canals and the Hrozyva River, the Slovechna is connected to the neighboring Zholon.
Birds and Marshes
The wetlands along the Slovechna are an important resting place for migratory birds. In spring and autumn, hundreds of birds can be seen here, attracting birdwatchers with binoculars and cameras. Villages on the Banks
The Slovechna flows through the villages of Ovruch region — Voznychi, Nizhnya Rudnya, Serednya Rudnya, and Slovechne. In Slovechne, there is the Museum of Partisan Glory, which tells the story of why the village was called the „partisan capital“ of Polissia.
Tip
The lower course of the Slovechna runs through border areas near Belarus. Restrictions apply here during martial law, so carry your documents with you, check in advance where you are allowed to go, and do not approach the border. It is best to explore the river in its upper reaches, near the ridge.
How to Get There
