In the village of Topory in Ruzhyn hromada stand the ruins of the Holy Trinity Church — a place that looks abandoned today, but was once an important spiritual center. This is one of those sites where history is literally visible in the walls: destroyed vaults, empty windows, and traces of alterations from various eras.

The church stands in the center of the village and, despite its condition, immediately attracts attention. This is not a developed tourist location — everything here is as authentic as possible and even a bit raw.

A Little History

Topory changed hands several times. In 1792, Count Rzewuski sold the village to Vaskevych, who resold it to Konopacki in 1800. It was the landowner Konopacki who built a brick church here in 1803. The Rzewuski family once again became the last owners of Topory.

What Remains Today

Virtually all that remains of the church are:

  • outer walls;
  • partially preserved structures;
  • empty window openings;
  • fragments of architectural elements.

Once a complete church, today it is a ruin that is gradually deteriorating further.

The Soviet Period and Decline

Like many religious buildings, the church in Topory did not escape changes during the Soviet era. It was no longer used for its original purpose and was adapted for other needs.

At different times, it housed:

  • a library;
  • a house of culture.

For this purpose, the building was even replanned — divided into two floors, which severely affected its structure.

As late as 1983, the village council was located in the church building. After the collapse of the USSR, the institutions operating in the building gradually closed, and in the 1990s the church itself was completely left unattended. According to locals, everything that could be stolen was looted after that, and the church began turning into a ruin. Despite this, traces of old frescoes can still be seen on the walls in some places.

Locals also say they know where the church bell was hidden. And they believe that if restoration ever takes place, it will be returned to its place.

At one point, there were plans to restore the church with Polish participation — oak beams for the ceiling were even brought in. According to locals, a man named Marek was the initiator. However, after his death in a car accident, the project stalled, and the building was once again left neglected.

Atmosphere of the Place

Today, the church looks like a typical example of forgotten architecture: silence, lack of restoration, a sense of abandonment.

Yet this is precisely what creates a powerful atmosphere. It is not a place "for everyone," but it conveys the contrast between past and present very well.

What Else to See Nearby

In Topory, you can see another unusual detail — old, elongated red buildings. These are historic stables associated with the Rzewuski family. Unlike the church, they have survived to this day in significantly better condition.

What you should know

  • the site is in ruins — unrestored;
  • there is no infrastructure;
