Zamkova Hora (Castle Hill) in Zhytomyr is one of the oldest and most important historical spots in the city. According to legends, it is right here that the history of Zhytomyr began. The site is located on the rocky bank of the Kamianka River near its confluence with the Teteriv and combines several layers of history—from Kyivan Rus times to the modern urban space.

According to lore, it was on this hill that a warrior named Zhytomyr, who served in the retinue of Princes Askold and Dir, founded the first fortified settlement. After the death of the princes, he left Kyiv and chose this place for a new life, naturally protected by rocks and water.

History and Fortress

Over the centuries, this area held strategic importance. From approximately the 11th to the 18th century, a fortress existed here—initially wooden, and later stone. It protected the city from raids and served as its administrative center.

The fortification itself has not survived to the present day; only minor fragments of ramparts and relief remain. However, even these traces allow one to imagine how powerful this defensive point was in its time.

Underground Tunnels

One of the most fascinating features of Zamkova Hora is the underground tunnels running at various depths. They formed an entire system that served both defensive and household functions.

During research, it was found that one of the tunnels led directly to the Kamianka River. This was critically important because there was no well on the castle grounds, thus ensuring water supply during a siege.

Most of these passages are inaccessible for free visits today, but the very fact of their existence adds mystery to the place and gives rise to a separate stratum of urban legends.

Modern Appearance

Today, Zamkova Hora is a small yet cozy urban square with a viewing platform overlooking the Kamianka valley. A memorial sign in honor of the founding of Zhytomyr has been installed here, reminding visitors of the historical significance of this location.

The place is popular among locals for walks, recreation, and photos with scenic views. Despite its small size, it feels like an entirely different atmosphere here—quieter and more "historical" than the rest of the center. The city has a reconstruction concept for Zamkova Hora, so the space may change in the future.
